I was already running on zero sleep when I started I was already running on zero sleep when I started solids…

The last thing I had capacity for was stressing about a possible allergic reaction 🤪

So instead of guessing every time I introduced a new food,

I worked with two pediatricians to create a simple, step-by-step allergen plan, so you don’t have to overthink it.

One thing I wish every parent knew:

Just rubbing an allergen on your baby’s skin isn’t recommended at all! They need to actually eat it to know if there’s a true allergy.

Allergic reactions the first time are more likely to be hives (rash) or vomiting.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed and just want someone to walk you through it step-by-step, our app does exactly that. You can check it out at the link in my bio!

Has this happened to your baby too?? I personall Has this happened to your baby too??

I personally find the time around 1-2 years brings on a few unique challenges with feeding.

Here are a few big developmental changes around this age:
1️⃣ Growth slows down-they’re still growing, just not as fast, so appetites may dip. It can feel like they’re surviving on air (and Ms. Rachel).
2️⃣ Language takes off! They start expressing likes and dislikes, but keep offering those “no-thank-you” foods anyway.
3️⃣ Interest in utensils grows, though skills are still developing. Switching between hands and utensils (and a little frustration) is normal!
4️⃣ You may notice more food rejection, even for foods they used to love. This can be part of a natural cautious phase, just try to avoid pressuring them to eat.

Learn more about navigating this tricky phase in the guides by age section of BLW Meals app. Download it for free in our bio! #startingsolids #babyfood #blw #babyledweaning #babyfoodideas
Anyone else scared to offer meat?? Meat can feel i Anyone else scared to offer meat??
Meat can feel intimidating! So here’s what I do to make it safer as a pediatric dietitian.
✔️ Make sure it is tender enough to mash
✔️ Big enough they can’t fit the whole thing in their mouth
✔️ Adding a fat source (like olive oil) to meatballs and storing them in sodium free broth

I totally get those big bites can look scary.
But this is how they learn!!
I always pause before jumping in. Sometimes the moment feels like it lasts forever, and it truly feels like time stops. But it’s usually just a few seconds… and he’s calm, breathing, andfiguring it out.
Introducing allergens doesn’t have to feel overwhelming!
We built step-by-step plans (with our pediatric feeding team) so you don’t have to overthink it. Does your little one love toast? That can be a great starting point to offer other nutrients!

Our team of pediatric feeding specialists at BLW Meals App loves using a “basic food” like toast, to offer a variety of other flavors and textures!

Brunch Toast: mashed avocado + hard-boiled egg

Pizza Toast: marinara sauce + mozzarella cheese + toppings of your choice*

*avoid lunch meats for babies and try using nitrate-free options for kids

Nutty Apple Toast: Nut butter of choice + thinly sliced (grated) apples + hemp hearts

Chickpea Salad on Toast: Chickpea Salad (Greek yogurt, lemon juice, celery, seasoning…)
I almost didn’t even try to keep offering zucchini I almost didn’t even try to keep offering zucchini… because I knew it would be a no.

Lately, veggies have been a struggle over here.

I’m ashamed to admit it, but I found myself in the pressure and “just try it” cycle. Honestly? It was backfiring.

I knew I had to do a different approach because this also just didn’t feel right for me personally.

So I changed one thing…

I got him involved.

I picked one thing I knew he liked to do, because he loves the novelty of shredding things.

We shredded the zucchini together, shredded cheese, rolled them into little balls…

and gave them a new name: Snack Bites

And just like that… he ate them.

No pressure from me. No negotiating.

This is exactly why our pediatric feeding team created this app!

So you have simple, dietitian-made recipes that actually *work* for real life (and real toddlers).

Hot take 🔥 The first food your baby eats…doesn’t Hot take 🔥

The first food your baby eats…doesn’t matter as much as you think.

But when you’re about to start solids it can feel like a HUGE decision.

Avocado?

Oatmeal?

Sweet potato?

Banana?

You’re googling.

Saving posts.

Wondering if you’re doing it “right.”

But the truth is… the first bite is just the starting line.

What actually matters more is:

💚 Feeling confident about offering food safely

💚 Knowing  choking hazards and how to prepare foods

💚 Following your baby’s hunger cues

💚 Offering the foods your family already eats

Because when you feel calm and confident… your baby picks up on that too.

These foods are just a few examples from our team to show there’s no one “perfect” first food. After you start, prioritize iron-rich sources and space out allergens!

If you want help taking the mental load out of starting solids, our BLW Meals App has a free library showing you EXACTLY how to offer foods, 700 recipes, and guides to get you through every stage created by feeding pros. 📲

Hey guys, Vanessa here. I’m a mom of three and whe Hey guys, Vanessa here. I’m a mom of three and when I tell you each kid is so different, I mean it. But tbh it’s not just the child who is different, it’s also you as a mother. With my first baby, I worried about every bite. If she only ate a few pieces, I wondered if I had done something wrong. I found myself comparing her to other babies who seemed to eat full meals with ease. It really felt like everyone else’s child was finishing their plate while mine was dropping food on the floor and losing interest after five minutes.

But by the time I had my second and third, I realized how much babies’ appetites can vary from day to day, and how little those small moments actually predict the bigger picture.

Some days they eat more, some days they eat less. Some meals are about tasting, touching, and learning rather than consuming a full portion. Eating is really just a skill that develops over time, and babies are very good at regulating how much they need when we allow them to listen to their own hunger and fullness cues.

One of the biggest lessons motherhood taught me is not to compare (and I mean this for myself as much as for how much my baby eats). Every baby has their own pace, their own preferences, and their own rhythm when it comes to food.

Snack time comes fast with toddlers… and when you’re already juggling work, dishes, laundry, and everything else, it’s easy to hit that “my brain has no more ideas” moment.

Are you thinking of starting with avocado? It’s the first one we suggest in our First 30 day meal plan (found inside our app).

Do you ever wonder how to safely offer foods to your baby? Whether you are starting solids with finger foods, purees or a combination of both, we’ve got you covered! Our BLW Meals App has resources to help you through this journey so you can confidently feed your baby!

In the beginning finger-length, stick-shaped foods are easier for babies to hold onto and self-feed, leaving a portion in the middle of the avocado slice makes it easier for them to grip.

Around 8-9 months they develop their pincer grasp, so soft bite-sized pieces are a great way to practice this new skill.

Always make sure food is soft enough to easily squish between your fingers.

It’s SO tempting. They don’t eat, you panic, and It’s SO tempting. They don’t eat, you panic, and you make something else. We WANT them to eat right??
But here’s what most parents don’t realize 👇When we jump in with a backup meal, we accidentally teach them:
“If I wait… I’ll get my favorite.”
So they stop trying the first meal altogether.
Sometimes they aren’t rejecting a meal because they don’t like it, often times it’s because they’re still learning!
There could also be a lot of other things going on and it’s so crucial to look at the ROOT of the rejection first.

Babies and toddlers usually need more time, exposure, and repetition than we think. We’re talking 10-20x before a food feels familiar, and they feel comfortable trying a teeny taste.
So instead of swapping the meal, try this:✨ Keep offering it (no pressure)✨ Pair it with a safe food or favorite food you know they like✨ Change the shape, texture, or how it’s served
This is how real food acceptance happens without battles.
And if you’re sitting there at dinner thinking,“okay but WHAT do I actually serve…”
That’s exactly why we made the app.

Don’t immediately offer an alternative! 🛑 Sometim Don’t immediately offer an alternative! 🛑

Sometimes it’s easy to feel discouraged when they don’t eat or finish a meal. But that doesn’t mean they hate something, it just may mean they need more time!

If we immediately jump to make a second meal or stop offering a specific food, we take away their opportunity to learn how to eat it, and learn to like it.

👉🏽 Also, offering a second meal may lead baby to “hold out” and skip the first one while they wait for their favorites on the second meal. Then they will continue to reject the first option, knowing a second favorite one will come soon.

Don’t assume they won’t like something, and then stop offering it! In the beginning of starting solids babies are exploring and learning everything in their environments and they make funny faces or may not finish plates ALL the time.

💡 We recommend you serve favorites with new foods and vary how offer them so they don’t get stuck in a rut. It can take over 10-20 exposures to a food before they may feel comfortable tasting it on their own.
